CKD-EPI eGFR Calculator

Estimate glomerular filtration rate using the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation.

The 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation estimates glomerular filtration rate in adults using serum creatinine, age, and sex. The equation does not include a race coefficient.

eGFRcr = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)^α × max(Scr/κ, 1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^Age × 1.012 [if female]

κ = 0.7 for females and 0.9 for males

α = −0.241 for females and −0.302 for males

Serum creatinine should be entered in mg/dL.

Clinical Use

The 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation is a recommended method for estimating glomerular filtration rate in adults.

The equation:

• Estimates GFR from serum creatinine, age, and sex

• Does not include a race coefficient

• Is designed for adults age 18 years and older

• Should be used with creatinine measurements standardized to isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS)

eGFR is an estimate rather than a direct measurement of glomerular filtration rate. Results should be interpreted in the context of the complete clinical picture, including trends in kidney function and circumstances in which serum creatinine may be an unreliable filtration marker.

About the Equation

The 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation was developed to estimate GFR without the use of race. It replaced the race-based coefficient used in the earlier 2009 CKD-EPI creatinine equation.

The equation was developed and validated by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration and published by Inker and colleagues in 2021.
